The Amazon is a Woman es un proyecto que realicé en 2020 para Atmos. Se trata de un retrato de cuatro mujeres que han arriesgado sus vidas para defender el lugar más biodiverso del planeta. “Nadie comprende la violencia ejercida contra la selva amazónica como las mujeres indígenas que la llaman hogar.” En Pará —el estado más violento de la Amazonia brasileña, líder en deforestación y epicentro de los incendios provocados que devastaron el bosque en 2019— las mujeres también encabezan la resistencia. Maria Leusa Munduruku, Juma Xipaya, Bel y Anita Yudjá, y Socorro do Burajuba se han erigido como lideresas en una selva teñida con la sangre de su pueblo.” Palabras de Eliane Brum.

The amazon is a woman is an assignment I made in 2020 for Atmos. A portrait of four women who risked their lives in order to defend the most biodiverse place on Earth. “No one understands the violence being committed against the Amazon Rainforest like the indigenous women who call it home”. “In Pará—the most violent state in the Brazilian Amazon, the leader in deforestation, and the epicenter of the deliberately set fires that devastated the forest in 2019—women are likewise at the forefront of the struggle. Maria Leusa Munduruku, Juma Xipaya, Bel and Anita Yudjá, and Socorro do Burajuba have emerged as leaders in a forest stained by their people’s blood.” Words by Eliane Brum.
